Can quitting smoking abruptly "cold turkey" cause an increase in blood pressure.?I'm 24 and just quit smoking two days ago 'cold turkey' and had my annual physical today. My blood pressure was through the roof! 141 over 86. I took my blood pressure over a month ago and it was fine. Doc said not to worry and he will monitor it again in two weeks after he receives my bloodwork. Are the nicotine withdrawal symptoms here including anxiety, irritability, and restlessness causing high blood pressure?

Unfortunetly, I am not sure if high blood pressure is a side effect of quitting smoking, but I can tell you that anxiety, irritability, and restlessness are all part of quitting!!! And yes, all of those could cause your blood pressure to be up.
Your blood pressure is not too high right now, so you don't have much reason for concern. Especailly because your doctor is on it.
I quit smoking a month ago...I also quit cold turkey. It was extrememly tough on my body. My body went through all kinds of weird stuff. I am happy I quit though.
CONGRATS on quitting. And, hang in there!!!

Blood pressure can fluctuate very easily. One trip to the doctor is not something to get worked up over. If you do quit smoking and your BP stays high then your doc can look at your kidney function among other things, but don't sweat it for now.
Did you know that 1 month after quitting smoking you are already at a 50% lower risk of heart disease and stroke than if you were still smoking? That level goes to 100% and 200% within a few years of no smoking....Not to mention that cigarettes have THE HIGHEST level of nicotine in them in history this year, over 10% higher than 2005 alone!! QUIT WHILE YOU CAN!!!

Smoking increases the blood pressure. Sometimes within minutes of stopping smoking, your blood pressure and heart rate can decrease.
It's very likely that your blood pressure reading was due to anxiety or any number of other things, but it's worth watching. I'd venture a guess that an overall trend would be downwards.
You made the right decision to stop.
