The FDA is weighing restrictions on Robitussin, NyQuil and other cough suppressants to curb cases of abuse that send thousands of people to the hospital each year. The agency posted its review of dextromethorphan, which is an ingredient found is over 100 over-the-counter medications and is sometimes abused by teenagers for its "euphoric effects." At high doses, the drug causes increased blood pressure, heart rate and fever and abusers can also suffer side effects from other ingredients that are mixed in. According to the FDA, approximately 8000 emergency room visits in 2008 were due to inappropriate use.
