21 year old female, not overweight, high blood pressure? How common is it for a 21 year old, 5 foot 4 inch, 137 pound female to have high blood pressure and die of a heart attack/stroke? I know 137 pounds isnt *thin* by any means but it isnt medically overweight either. (I'm in college, give me a break!) I don't smoke, and although I don't exercise regularly right now, I am by no means inactive, as I walk around campus all the time (which is a big campus, plus the lack of parking makes the walks even further) and do situps and lift toning weights when i remember to. I also take a daily Heart Healthy Pack of vitamins which has 5 vitamins best for heart health and blood pressure. I don't eat well, but I also don't eat red meat (or any meat), or fast food. I just eat too much simple, college kid food, like bread and cheese and I grab crackers or something. I know i prob have too much sodium in my diet but I mean it couldnt be THAT bad...could it?? My docs attributed it to my anxiety disorders (general and social) and my intense nervousness going to docotors offices at all, and after I am there for a bit she takes my blood pressure again and it has gone down (to normal i suppose).
I drink lots of water, and I know I need tor relax and start regular exercise asap (im thinking yoga could kill two birds with one stone there), but does anyone have any other suggestions?? Or, does anyone know if it is at all common for non overweight 21 year old girls to have a stroke or heart attack from high blood pressure?
Thanks!

I was diagnosed with high blood pressure at 13. YES IT CAN HAPPEN. I was 5'4" and 135 pounds, much like you. I am also female.
When people think of high blood pressure they think of a 50 year old fat guy sitting in Burger king stuffign his face.
Just being a thin vegetarian isn't enough. Most of those "specialized" vitamins are a scam, just get one good multivitamin like One A Day and that will be better.
Your diet really is that bad. Everything you put in your mouth will affect your health, regardless of how small it is. Do you eat 5 fruits and vegetables a day? I know it sounds like a lot but that really is the bare ninimum. AT LEAST eat a salad everyday, with Italian dressiing or no dressing at all.
Your body can not function only on carbs. If you are a vegetarian then you should eat more beans and tofu for your protein. That is needed for heart health. Also, NEVER EAT WHITE BREAD. It is as nutritional as a rock.
There are many easy and healthy meals you can make. http://cheaphealthygood.blogspot.com/2007/09/cheap-healthy-college-food-tips-for.html That is a great resource

And what is your blood pressure reading??LOL
Without an indication of how high is your BP I can't help you:)

For one thing you don't list what your bp is so no help there. What I can tell you is that a vegetarian diet has to be maintained with a doctor so you can have regular blood work. You need to be taking in the right amount of protein everyday. You don't have to get it from meat, but make sure your getting enough. Too much water isn't good either. It will flush whatever nutrients you are eating right through your body. You only need 8-10 glasses a day, unless you need it to rehydrate from sweat or exercise. The last thing that I'll bring up is your anxiety disorders. Those will attribute to your high blood pressure and heart attacks than your weight. Along with intense nervousness you're pulling quite allot of mental health issues. Try working on bettering yourself that way and I am willing to bet things will fall back into line with your physical health. I wish you good luck and may God Bless.
