Three papers published in the Lancet medical journal could offer clues to fighting obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol -- three conditions quickly becoming pandemics. Denver's KDVR has more. "Worldwide obesity levels have nearly doubled since 1980. (FLASH) In 2008, nearly 10 percent of men and 14 percent of women were obese. That's compared to nearly 5 percent of men and 8 percent of women back in 1980." But the results aren't as simple as an increase in obesity -- they highlight key differences in obesity and weight-related health complications depending on a nation's economic status. In Emax Health, the study's lead author says the results paint a new picture of health trends. "Our results show that overweight and obesity, high blood pressure and high cholesterol are no longer Western problems or problems of wealthy nations. Their presence has shifted towards low and middle income countries, making them global problems." And in an ABC article, an assistant professor of health policy at Columbia University says that development could be related to increasing quality of life in developing nations. "We are increasingly dependent upon automobiles rather than public transit, walking, et cetera. ...There is also a trend toward eating high-calorie processed foods, movements towards automating many manual labor jobs and working more hours at sedentary ...
